The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
